MARCH IS NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH: Each week this month, we will be exploring the wonderful world of nutrition! According to the USDA, people age 60+ have unique nutritional needs to keep in mind as we age. Below are some of needs along with tips on how to meet these needs:
• Enjoy a variety of chronic foods from each food group to help reduce the risk of developing diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Be sure to choose foods with little to no added sugar, saturated fats, and sodium.
• Get enough protein throughout your day to maintain muscle mass.
• Focus on the nutrients you need, including potassium, calcium, vitamin D, dietary fiber, and vitamin B12.
• With age, you may lose some of your sense of thirst. Drink water often. Low- or fat-free milk, including lactose-free options or fortified soy beverage and 100% juice can also help you stay hydrated. Limit beverages that have lots of added sugars or salt. Learn which beverages are healthier choices.
• Maintain a healthy weight or prevent additional weight gain by following a healthy dietary pattern and adopting an active lifestyle.
• Learn how much to eat from all five food groups and find out how many calories you need each day to help you maintain energy using the MyPlate Plan.
• Avoid unnecessary illness by keeping food safe. Learn more about the four steps to safer food choices—Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill—at FoodSafety.gov.
A MATTER OF BALANCE CLASS TO BE HELD IN MONROE CITY: A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance. Generations’ in partnership with Purdue Extension will be offering A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls at the Blue Jean Center, 1242 Main St., Monroe City, IN beginning Thursday, March 17th and continuing each Thursday through May 5th. Classes will be held from 10 am to 12 pm This 8-week program is offered free of charge, but pre-registration is required. Spots are limited! VOLUNTEER COACHES NEEDED FOR CHRONIC DISEASE SELF-MANAGEMENT PROGRAM: Generations is seeking volunteers to be trained to facilitate a chronic disease self-management program for individuals living with chronic health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, respiratory disease, arthritis, etc. Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions is an evidence-based program that was developed by Stanford University and has been showing results for over 30 years. The Living a Health Life with Chronic Conditions Coaches Training will be held at Vincennes University March 7-10 from 9 am to 3 pm each day.
